Why It’s Best To Replace Your Furnace and Air Conditioning At the Same Time

A properly functioning heating and cooling system can make the world of difference in your ability to be comfortable in your home. If one system breaks down, you may be tempted to only replace that system, instead of both, but that could become an even bigger problem for you down the road. Replacing both systems at the same time, even if one is still operating, can save you energy and money in the long run. Below are several advantages to replacing both your heating and cooling systems at the same time.

Energy Efficiency

Heating and cooling systems are much more energy efficient today than they were just 10-15 years ago. For air conditioning systems, check the SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) to compare the levels of efficiency. The minimum government standard for cooling systems is a 13, so make sure the new system you’re looking at reaches or surpasses that. The higher the SEER, the less energy is used and the cheaper to operate.

For heating systems, check the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) to measure seasonal performance. For a new, efficient furnace, an AFUE of 90% or higher is recommended. In general, a modern furnace can last 15-20 years if properly maintained, while a central air conditioning system can last 12-15 years.

Mixing Technology

Mixing technology from two different systems, old and new, can decrease overall performance. If you install a single new, energy efficient system and connect it to your old system, the components might not match and you won’t be utilizing the new technology to its full potential.

Meanwhile, matched systems complement each other. The heating and cooling systems share the same air handler, or blower. If you have one old and one new system, the blower might not be adequate for both. A matched system will allow both the heating and cooling to function properly, resulting in the comfort level you desire.

You’ll also save money over time with a matched system. As repairs are needed, the warranty for both systems will still be valid, and you’ll save money by having them repaired or checked at the same time. You’ll also save money on installation by having a matched system. You’ll only have to pay the installation fee once, instead of twice. If your systems don’t match, you’ll be paying the installation fee again when you update the second system.

Unexpected Issues with Unmatched Systems

The possibility of unexpected issues arising with unmatched systems is much higher than with matched systems. With unmatched systems, the older system can potentially decrease the lifespan of the new system, resulting in even more money spent. From the manufacturing side of things, warranties of new systems do not have to be honored if they’re combined with older systems. A warranty is a powerful thing, and you should think carefully about doing anything to negatively affect the warranty of any household system.

Replacing both your heating and cooling systems at the same time can insulate you against headaches in the future.
